Real estate is an essential component of the US economy. It is one of the few industries offering the option to be an employee or explore owning a business. It remains an exciting career proposition for people who enjoy networking, problem-solving, and are self-motivated. For those with an interest in the industry, a business degree provides a solid foundation to pursue various real estate career options.
A bachelor’s degree in business equips individuals with essential knowledge in areas such as accounting, finance, marketing, human resources, and operations. Combining these technical skills with effective communication, critical thinking, and team-building in one program equips the graduate with a blend of hard and soft business skills.
Opting for a concentration in real estate within a business program allows students to dive deeper into specific areas such as property management, real estate law, and project development. There will also be in-depth studies of the types of loans used in real estate transactions, specific state and federal laws, and other legal issues related to the real estate business. While each state has different licensing requirements, a business degree with a real estate concentration provides a proper foundation to eventually earn a license.
In terms of career options, business graduates can pursue roles such as real estate brokers or sales agents. Brokers manage their own real estate business, are usually more schooled than agents, and have earned a state broker certification. Brokers need to work with real estate sales agents (through the brokerage business) to help buyers acquire properties. Sales agents, on the other hand, assist clients in buying and selling properties and must complete a state-mandated number of courses and pass an exam to obtain licensure.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics projected opportunities for those working in real estate to grow around 7 percent from 2018 to 2028.
